Case Study
JLG FT 70 and FT140
The Project was focused on how could we design and develop a light weight and portable work platform that could
raise and lower a 100 kilo person to a work height of 20 feet using a power drill for drive. The research involved
the development of a mechanical drive system with reduced friction to increase efficiencies as well as the design
of a compact and collapsible lightweight platform. The challenge to develop a drive system that could achieve up
to 20 cycles of operation on one charge required new systems including the use of Acme threads in conjunction
gas struts. The resultant design achieves the performance requirements and provides a safe working environment
for trades people with a 360 degree reach to work surfaces.
The JLG liftpod provides a portable light weight work surface for use in multiple commercial and industrial
environments including building sites and retail environments across global markets. There is considerable
evidence to suggest that the use of ladders in workplaces are a major cause of injury and down time. The JLG FT
70 and FT140 provide a safe viable option to a step ladder to undertake elevated tasks for extended periods. The
designs have safety hand rails and secure footing with a unique drive system to raise and lower the work platform
without the need for steps. This is a global product that will change work practices and reduce injury in work
place environments.
